History
The Society was not formally established until 1979, nevertheless workshops, courses and related activities were organised intensively during the 70´s. Officially, the Committee for parenteral and enteral nutrition was founded by Zdeněk Zadák and his co-workers in 1979, and the Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition in former Czechoslovakia was established in 1985. The broad range of activity of the Society included annual congresses with international participations, educational courses for physicians and nurses, and numerous workshops, lectures and meetings. The Society promoted research and publication activity and it became highly respected within the health professionals. Following 1999, international contacts widespread intensively. The Clinical Nutrition Subgroup, focused especially to dietary practice and food industry, started to work in 1999, and the Society got its actual name – Czech Society of Clinical Nutrition and Intensive Metabolic Care- in 2000.
At this time, the Czech Society for Clinical Nutrition and Intensive Metabolic Care is officially registered by the Czech Medical Society of J.E. Purkyně.
In the whole history, Zdeněk Zadák was the outstanding leading personality who has always been in the centre of activities associated with clinical nutrition and metabolism and who has been promoting research and education. His charismatic person attracted numerous health professionals to the field of clinical nutrition. At the National Congress 2002, he was named Honorary Member of the Committee.
Structure and organisation
The Czech Society for Clinical Nutrition and Intensive Metabolic Care has about 450 ordinary members, consisting of physicians, pharmacists, nurses, dietitians, researchers, students and company representatives. The site of secretariat is in Prague. The executive committee is elected for a period of 4 years (the last one works from March 2007).
AIM
Czech Society for Clinical Nutrition and Intensive Metabolic Care is a major subject relevant to the field of clinical nutrition and metabolism and it promotes:
- support of basic and clinical research in nutrition and metabolism
- education for clinicians and nurses
- updates of guidelines for clinical nutrition and metabolic care
- support of education of dietitians and dietary care
- quality control in clinical nutrition
Acknowledgement
We have a special pleasure to acknowledge, that our national society was charged by the local organisation of the 29th ESPEN congress, which was held from 8th to 11th September 2007 in Prague. It was a great honor for the Czech Society of Clinical Nutrition and Intensive Metabolic Care to host such a leading meeting of the top notch representatives of nutritional and metabolic care and to welcome them in the heart of Europe, in our charming historical city of Prague.
